There is a lot happening in Ballarat tonight including an awesome night of comedy which apparently is to become a bit more of a regular thing in Ballarat.
Former Sebastopol girl Janet McLeod has been producing live comedy shows in Melbourne for more than 15 years and tonight she is presenting The Great BIG Comedy Night at Portico on Sturt.
The line-up includes Australian comedy legend Dave O'Neil (Spicks & Specks), Zara (Rove Live), Michael Connell and special guest acting legend Charles Barrington.
It kicks off at 8.30pm with last orders to the kitchen by 7.45pm, so get there early if you're planning on wining and dining. Tickets will set you back $25. There will be a limited number of tickets available at the door so the advice is to arrive at least an hour prior to the show to secure them.
Or, if a funny production is what you're in the mood for, then you're in luck! Sweet Charity is a play about the adventures of a dance hall hostess in 1960's New York, or rather the misadventures of Charity Hope Valentine. Tickets cost $30 and it starts at 7.30pm at the Helen Macpherson Smith Theatre in Camp Street. Phone 5333 5888 for tickets.

The Ballarat Floral Art Group is presenting a floral art display all weekend between 10am - 5pm at the Robert Clark Centre in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens.Demonstrations and guest speakers will be held daily at 11am and 2pm. Entry costs $5.
If you're looking for something to do with the kids for the first weekend of school holidays, why not check out Sovereign Hill? The whole town is set to come alive during a daily grand parade with decorations, music, fanfares and celebrations to mark the discovery of a huge gold nugget. Adult tickets cost $45 and children tickets cost $20.50. Otherwise you can buy a family ticket for $113. Gates open at 10am.
If a day at the races if what you're up for then head along to the Gold Nugget Day Horses and Horsepower raceday on Sunday. Entry costs $10 for an adult and children under 16 enter for free. Gates at the Dowling Forest Racecourse open at 11am.
