In Saturday’s crucial outing against Ocean Grove, the Hawks clinched a 92-82 win away from home to get its campaign back on track.
The victory followed last round’s triumph over Avenue, which was the club’s first win of the season.
City Oval chairman of selectors Gavin Mann said it was a great result.
“We’re very happy,” Mann said.
“All four rinks clicked during the day. It was nice to finally win a close one and be on the right side of the ledger.
“To come back after the bye week and string two wins together is terrific.”
City Oval didn’t drop a rink on Saturday, winning three and forcing a draw with Heath Fumberger’s side.
The Hawks were also without three key players – John Peddlesden, David Flintoff and Stan Neale.
The trio were replaced by Wayne Clarke and Lloyd Sims, as well as Kerry Watts, who made history as the first female to play for the Hawks in the premier division.
Watts and Sims were part of Tony Gutteridge’s side, which recovered from a poor start to somehow manage a 26-21 win.
At one stage, they trailed Ocean Grove by 11 shots.
Mann said the comeback was the day’s highlight.
“It was huge,” he said.
“They were certainly the standout rink for the day.”
It was a strong return to form for City Oval, which was without a win to its name after the opening four rounds of the season.
However, according to Mann, the Hawks always believed that things would start turning around.
“We were always confident,” he revealed.
“We knew the wins would come. We were always close to the mark – we just weren’t getting the wins.”
Mann emphasised that the club would need to keep improving and show consistency with its performances, starting with Queenscliff on Saturday.
In a tight affair, Queenscliff was handed an 87-81 defeat at the hands of Sebastopol.
The Kookaburras proved too good in the battle between second and third on the ladder, holding Queenscliff to just the solitary rink win.
Sebastopol has moved up to second spot on the ladder, while the Cliffers have dropped to fourth.
Other clubs experienced big victories on the weekend.
Torquay were far too good for the winless Avenue, claiming an impressive 122-74 victory to rise into fifth position.
Avenue did manage to snare a rink win, courtesy of Geoff White’s side, but were otherwise soundly beaten.
Meanwhile, Geelong City made it three wins in a row after its 94-69 derby success over Lara. The club’s recent strong form has seen it rise into the top three.
Victoria remains the club to beat, however, after its 97-71 win against Webbcona.
Undefeated and sitting one win clear at the summit, Victoria once again showcased its quality by not dropping a rink over the course of the afternoon.
Seventh-placed Webbcona has now lost three in a row and faces a tough challenge when it meets Sebastopol on Saturday.
LADDER: VICTORIA 99 points, SEBASTOPOL 76, GEELONG CITY 70, QUEENSCLIFF 69, Torquay 54, Ocean Grove 53, City Oval 47, Webbcona 37, Lara 25, Avenue 10
