This is what Ballarat audiences can expect when garage punk outfit Swidgen heads to town.
Featuring members of Melbourne bands Warped, Palenecks and Surfin’ Poobars, the outfit is comprised of Sammy P Crawford on guitar and vocals, Richie Brownlee on drums and Fred Zerner on bass.
United under the banner of tasty riffage and large beats, Brownlee said the three-piece formed in 2008 and came out of numerous jamming sessions.
“Basically, we all played in various other bands and had this big jamming collective happening. It was one of those things where we thought we’d have a jam and a good time but it just kept going,” he said.
After releasing a debut EP, Swidgen went on to produce its first full-length record but didn’t get around to officially releasing it.
In 2014, the band recorded its second album Doghouse which they felt had a much more cohesive sound, honing in on the jam room and on the sweaty stages of Melbourne’s pubs.
Feeling proud and accomplished, the band decided to go one step further and release the record in vinyl.
“Doghouse captured our sound beautifully and we thought, we like this, why not have our own vinyl?” Brownlee said.
“It’s kind of exciting to have a piece of vinyl, especially now that everything is in digital, so we couldn’t resist.”
To add another creative element, the release of Doghouse on vinyl will also be accompanied by the re-release of all three of Swidgen’s records. Each of the albums will feature uniquely created cover art and can be sold individually or as packages.
“A good friend of ours has a business and they do a lot of posters for local bands,” Brownlee said.
“For the three records, he did an original artwork and repackaged it to make a matching set of CDs making them more desirable.
“We tried to stay away from the swords and skulls and pentagrams and have tried to make the music do the talking to an equal degree. We’re really happy with the way it’s turned out.”
Swidgen will perform at The Eastern on Friday, December 4.
