The Breakers have dominated the WNCL since it started in 1996-97, winning all but two competitions, and should all go to plan by stumps, they will have matched the great St George Dragons' effort of winning 11 straight grand finals, from 1955-66.

Their road to a shot at the record started in 2005-06 when NSW beat Queensland and while the Dragons' record has generated unprecedented interest in the final, Perry, who has represented Australia at the cricket and football world cups, said she and the Breakers were simply focussed on scoring runs and taking wickets.

Before taking on South Australia at Hurstville Oval – in the middle of the Dragons' old territory – Perry said the Breakers took comfort in the fact they are peaking after qualifying for a home final with last weekend's 10-wicket victory over Victoria, the only other team to have held aloft the Ruth Preddey Cup.

"We've never mentioned the record among ourselves, but we're very fortunate to have had a lot of experience in big matches over the last 10 years," said Perry, who made her NSW debut in 2007-08 after representing Australia as a 16-year-old.

"This season has been a very competitive one, there's been a lot of tough cricket, but it's pleasing we've started playing our best cricket towards the end ... it's a nice feeling going into a final."

While Perry conceded South Australia have been one of the benchmark teams this summer, the Breakers demonstrated their fighting qualities after a slow start to the season left them in fourth position after the opening rounds.

Under Alex Blackwell's captaincy they rallied and secured their berth at the top of the competition ladder with dominant victories, which yielded invaluable bonus points.

Perry played an important role in the fightback. Apart from taking five wickets, she finished the regular season on top of the run scorer's list with 383 runs at an average of 76. Her effort to add 126 to Blackwell's 108 against the ACT last Saturday – Perry's knock included 15 boundaries and two sixes – highlighted her potency.

"She's been so consistent with the bat," said Blackwell, the only Breaker to have played in each of the team's 11 finals. "It was only a matter of time before she scored her first WNCL hundred. She accumulates runs so well and she has the power game as well.

"Her batting this year has been outstanding, she's been our most consistent batter and has got regular scores above 50."

Blackwell said the team's older heads and younger players had combined to form a successful team, before acknowledging South Australia, who defeated NSW on the final ball of their match earlier in the season.

"We're confident we have the team to win this final, but it's going to be a very good match against a very good South Australia team," she said. "They also look like they're enjoying their cricket and playing well as a unit. The two best teams have made the final."

Blackwell, who met with St George great Raper earlier in the season, said one of the most pleasing aspects about the shot at the record was what it could mean for women's sport.

"It's great we're getting the level of interest to have the final linked with a great sporting team from the past," she said.

"I thought that winning 10 in a row last year was significant, but maybe if we win the Breakers will continue to get that kind of exposure in the years to come."
