After edging out 25 schools to win the state competition in Geelong earlier this month, the two teams of year eight and nine students are gearing up to take on 30 teams from around the country.
The competition encourages teams to emulate a professional Formula 1 team, who race a scaled down, gas powered car along a 10 metre track.
Coordinating teacher Elaine Rooney said the competition provided a fantastic opportunity for students to apply skills from a range of subjects including physics, maths and design, while also gaining valuable public speaking skills.
“Standing up in front of a heap of strangers and speaking about what they’ve done is really beneficial.”
Students are responsible for managing all aspects of the team, from the design and creation of the car through to funding of the team through corporate sponsorship.
Momentum Racing team member Kruiz Jenkins said the team would need to raise around $7500 ahead of the nationals.
The world championships are set to take place in Texas in October next year.
