Students at St Alipius Primary School delved deep into the purpose and use of rules in society, as part of The Courier’s Newspapers in Education program.
Grade five and six students set about writing their own news stories to accompany photographs taken from The Courier – some showing rules being broken, some showing rules being followed.
NIE regional manager Liz Zelencich said newspapers were a vital tool in a school’s curriculum.
“They link together awareness of current affairs, forms of communication and the news,” she said.
“Newspapers offer a daily context for what the children are learning. What’s special and unique about newspapers is they are relevant and immediate and have the ability to link classroom learning to everyday events.”
Ms Zelencich said the NIE program continued to be successful in many Ballarat schools.
“With the support of our wonderful sponsors, Ballarat Community Health, Her Majesty’s Theatre and Loreto College, this brilliant teaching resource is able to be offered free of charge to all Newspapers in Education schools.”
