Release Lake Wendouree costings: McIntosh

BALLARAT councillor Samantha McIntosh has restated her calls for costings on controversial works on Lake Wendouree be released today.

With Ballarat City Council set to go into caretaker mode from midnight, Cr McIntosh called on senior council officers to release financial information on the work.

She said some of the contract costs had doubled and trebled and that she would call for an independent inquiry if the information wasn't released.

"There are two issues here: management's refusal to provide information to an elected Councillor; and the degree of cost over runs on lake-related contracts," Cr McIntosh said.

"Over the past six months I have asked repeatedly for detailed information about the cost of dredging the Lake, cutting the lake weed and installing the buoying system for the rowing course."

Cr McIntosh said the refusal of officers to release the information represented a lack of respect for the role of elected councillors.

"I feel I have been constantly and deliberately thwarted in my quest to get to the bottom of how much has been spent at the Lake. This failure to provide the financials makes me very suspicious about what is going on: it can't help but make me wonder what they are hiding - just how big are these cost-overruns?"

An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that council caretaker mode began at noon today.
