Special Olympics founder awarded

MAUREEN Eddy has been recognised by the Ballarat Sports Foundation for her contribution to Special Olympics.

The BSF honoured her with a service to sport award at its 50th scholarship presentation, which was marked by a special luncheon.

Eddy founded the Special Olympics movement for the Ballarat region in 2003.

She was the inaugural chairperson and continues to play a key role.

The foundation also acknowledged the contribution to the BSF of secretary Noel Pidgeon since its formation in the mid-1990s.

Some 23 scholarships were presented, include one to the Ballarat Special Olympics.

The foundation has now distributed 975 scholarships worth $327,695 and covering 73 sports.
