BALLARAT’S quiet achievers should have their moment to shine next Australia Day, Councillor Des Hudson said yesterday.
Every January 26, Ballarat City Council awards the prestigious titles of citizen of the year, young citizen of the year and community activity of the year as part of Australia Day Awards but Cr Hudson said the honours deserved a higher profile and more nominations.
At last night’s council meeting he called on residents, councillors and the media to promote the awards and submit nominations.
Cr Hudson said as many as 50 residents should be nominated for the awards and it was an opportunity to put forward those people who contribute to Ballarat’s vibrant community life.
“The genuine heroes of our community don’t get anywhere near the recognition they deserve,” Cr Hudson said in a passionate speech to the council chamber.
“These are the people who toil away behind the scenes and do so much for our community.”
Last night’s meeting resolved to accept nominations for the 2013 Australia Day Awards until Friday November 23, 2012 and establish a review committee to assess submissions.
