Paralympian Greg Smith has smart meter installed

Smart meters have arrived in Ballarat.

The rollout commenced yesterday at the home of London 2012 paralympic gold medallist Greg Smith. Smith’s Buninyong home was one of the first houses in the area to receive the device.

Some Ballarat houses have already received pamphlets informing them about the rollout.  For those properties, a secondary letter, 10 days before the installation occurs, is now expected.

Powercor regional asset manager Richard Scholten said that although there had been a lot of negative views about the installation, most people who had received smart meters were satisfied with their placement.

“This is an end to estimated bills,” he said. “The information has shown the technology is sound, there are no negative health effects and they are perfectly safe.”

Mr Scholten said there had been opposition throughout the statewide rollout, but Powercor was willing to sit down with those opposed to the installation. Almost 750,000 smart meters have been installed, with about 350,000 still to be fitted by the end of next year. Powercor figures show that 84 per cent of existing customers are satisfied with their smart meters.
