Redan dual premiership coach and former North Ballarat Roosters player Brendan Peace is a confirmed starter for the Bellarine league club in 2016.
Peace’s signing follows news that decorated Ballarat Swans star Adam Sewell will also join the club for next season.
Sewell and Peace are both past Ballarat interleague captains.
Peace leaves the Lions after a successful career that included premierships as coach in 2009 and 2011 and as a player in 2006.
Redan coach Eammon Gill told The Courier that Peace had long held a desire to join Torquay, where he has family at the club.
Gill said it wasn’t a major loss for the Lions in the sense that they were without the tough midfielder while he traveled overseas in 2015, but admitted it was disappointing he wouldn’t be playing in Redan colours.
“It’s disappointing not to have him, but at the same time we wish him all the best,” Gill said.
Gill said Peace was one of the greats of the club and was welcome back at any time down the track.
“He’s won club best and fairests and is a two-time premiership coach, so he’s done something right, hasn’t he?,” he said.
Torquay coach Dom Gleeson told krockfootball.com.au that the club “couldn’t be happier to get the two boys on board”.
“We’ve had a tie with Ballarat with some of the players on currently our list and they keep their finger on the pulse within the Ballarat circles,” he said.
“And that’s where we feel like we had to go because most of the club’s here (in the Geelong region) are retaining most of their players, although there has been a bit of movement.”
Gleeson said the pair’s impact is already being felt at Tigerland.
“They’re really keen to step-up their leadership within the club,” Gleeson said.
