A lot has changed since VHS was in it its hey day, but veteran Leading Edge video owners Col and Carmel Wandin say they still have loyal customers.
The couple have sold the building and will close their store. When they took over the store in 1990 there were 13 video stores in Ballarat.
Col Wandin looks fondly at the cover of his favourite movies. The self-proclaimed movie buff once watched four movies a week and with wife Carmel ran one of the city’s biggest video stores.

When he first opened VHS was the go and the dvd was a far off invention, little did he know that 25 years discs would be nearly defunct – replaced with streaming.
“We had 58,000 videos,” Mr Wandin said.
“It’s sad because I fear many of the nostalgic classics will be forgotten because they won’t be online, or they might be but people won’t find them.”
Mr Wandin prided himself in keeping an extensive collection of foreign films and movies of all genres.
“Some of them I’d never even heard of,” Mr Wandin said.
While quirky films were popular the classics prevailed, with Star Wars always a favourite.
But Mr Wandin’s biggest all time rental could come as a surprise.
“The most popular ever movie? It would probably be Happy Gilmore,” Mr Wandin said.
The couple are looking forward to some rest and relaxation, and time to watch some more movies. January 27 is the last day of trade.
