Horrifying footage from the incident shows a driver of a black Mitsubishi Triton ute, crossed over double lines, nearly directly into the pathway of the truck.
Police are searching for the ute driver – who was driving a female passenger and a child.
They say the incident, which could have been devastating, occurred at around 9.30am on December 31 on the Sunraysia Highway between Avoca and Maryborough.
Police say the truck driver was forced “to take evasive action, narrowly avoiding what would likely have been an horrific collision”.
The ute, which is damaged at the front and had only one working headlight, is yet to be identified.
Police have shared the video to warn drivers that using a mobile phone while driving is extremely dangerous.
Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
