The past month has been one of the state's warmest and wettest Januarys on record, weather bureau analysis shows.

The state's rainfall during January was about 56 per cent above average, while maximum temperatures were one degree above average.
The Bellarine Peninsula, the north-west of the state and parts of Gippsland experienced significantly above average rainfall, while the tip of Wilsons Promontory had its highest ever January rains.
The only parts of the state to experience below average rains were Warrnambool and fire-affected Apollo Bay.

Many record January rainfalls were recorded last month, including the "once in a century" rains that led to widespread flash-flooding in Geelong last week.
Seventy-two millimetres of rain was recorded at Avalon Airport last Wednesday, almost double the old record for that area for a single January day.
And on Sunday, 121 millimetres was recorded at Wilsons Promontory, 41 millimetres more than the previous record from January 1916.
Daily maximum temperatures for the past month were above average for Melbourne and most parts of the state except for the Gippsland and Central regions.

The bureau's forecast for February does not predict a continuation of last month's unseasonably high temperatures, with only the Gippsland region expected to experience a slightly warmer month than usual.
