Te Kanawa was born in New Zealand and was singing on radio from age six.
Having won major vocal prizes in Australasia, Te Kanawa made numerous television appearances, was awarded a Golden Disc for early recordings, and appeared in two movies. She left in 1965 for London.
After being engaged by Covent Garden as leading soprano in its 1971 production of Marriage of Figaro, Te Kanawa moved into the international circuit, becoming one of the most famous sopranos in recent history.
Her final appearance in a leading operatic role was in 2010 with Cologne Opera’s Der Rosenkavalier.
She continues to perform internationally and appeared in Downton Abbey in 2013, playing legendary Australian singer Dame Nellie Melba.
