The statement follows criticism by many local leaders including MP Sharon Knight who said in Parliament the Cardinal’s lack of concern for the Ballarat community meant he should never return to the city.
Cardinal Pell was this week given approval by the Commission to give evidence via video link due to an ongoing heart condition which he maintains prevents him from long-haul air travel.
“The Cardinal is clear that when his health improves and his workload permits, he hopes to return to Australia - but clearly, at this stage, the timing of any visit home cannot be determined.” a statement issued by his office said.
“The Cardinal stated again how important it was for survivors and for the general public that he be provided with an opportunity to respond to matters raised in recent hearings and to assist the Royal Commission in any way possible. He also repeated his disappointment at not being able to travel to Australia at this time and confirmed his willingness to work with the Commission's scheduling in respect of the time difference.”
The statement also said Cardinal Pell made it clear that while his medical advice prevents long haul travel, he is able to continue the work Pope Francis has asked him to undertake at the Vatican.
