She’s not alone – nobody has seen Linton’s Donald “Donny” Govan for more than a month and his family are desperate for news on his whereabouts.
The 16-year-old disappeared from an Echuca campsite on September 1. Since then only one reported sighting, the following day, is being treated as credible.
A massive air, land and water search could find no trace and now more than a month on, Donny’s family have run out of ideas.
Just four days after Donny’s disappearance, his sister Katrina O’Keane gave birth to Harmony.
Between the newborn and a statewide search for her brother, Katrina has had to deal with more than most new mums.
Despite a number of unconfirmed sightings of their brother in Melbourne, Donny’s sisters refuse to believe he is living in the city’s streets just a short train ride away.
“He’s definitely street-smart, but it’s not like him at all to live on the streets when he’s got a home and such a big family to come home to,” Katrina said.
She said Donny’s disappearance had been torturing her family and there was no relief in sight.
“You get guilty at night time when you’re wrapping yourself up in a blanket – you think ‘does he have a blanket with him?’ Then you think ‘is he even alive?’”
“Some days you think he’s coming home, then you think he’s passed on – it’s like a roller coaster.”
Katrina said her mother was one of the worst affected by Donny’s disappearance.
“Mum’s a mess. She doesn’t like to leave the house because she thinks Donny’s going to walk through the door,” she said.
“It is a bit of a relief knowing that a body hasn’t been found. But then you think, where is he?” Rachael O’Keane, who was with her brother when he ran away, said she was concerned media attention was dying off.
“He’s just turning into another statistic,” she said.
“We feel like we have to be doing something – but what else can we do?”
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Donny Govan call triple zero or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
