WITH Webbcona winning last year’s tournament in division one, the club is again a favourite to take the shield in 2013.
As the club has a side in the premier division as well, Webbcona has not been promoted but remains in the division.
Webbcona’s division one side was awarded the 2012 premier’s shield last Thursday at the club’s selection meeting and pie night.
President and division one bowler Harold Worsley said the presentation was made by Ballarat District Bowls Division board member Lionel Calf.
“We had a really good turnout with most of the club in attendance,” Worsley said.
“Everything seems to be going well – we’re comfortable.
“Hopefully we’ll have another good year.”
The celebration and shield presentation instilled confidence for the 2013 season.
This weekend Webbcona will take on Buninyong in division one, where it is expected to win – even as the away side.
“It looks like we’ve got a good, stable side with only a few changes, so it looks like we’ll have a good season,” Worsley said.
“We came from fourth position last year.
“It was great to make the finals and then come from fourth for the shield.”
Now the bowlers feel they are in good stead for the coming season beginning on Saturday.
Victoria Bowls Club also has a side in both the premier division and division one.
Victoria’s strong premier division side, which finished in fourth place last season, may have a trickle down effect to the division one side, giving the club an advantage when it comes to playing list depth.
