Take early steps against child obesity

Re Chris Bonnor's comment in Opinion (September 29).

Several years ago I supervised a university student who grew up in Hong Kong.

She spoke openly of spending a period of time in the "fatties club" at school. No doubt this was not the official title of the group.

Children were referred to this group by the visiting school nurse and were required to remain behind after school to attend a health education class.

In this class children were provided with the means to take responsibility for, returning to and maintaining a healthy weight.

As might be expected the content included exercise, healthy food choices and simple nutrition wise cooking.

At the very least this information is an alternative to the pervasive marketing of fast food, soft drinks and so-called energy drinks. From information which is already at hand, the need for a healthy population is obvious and

one of top priority. It is imperative that we take steps to ensure we have a healthy workforce for the future .
