Mr Ashby, 36, was riding along Lake Wendouree just after 6am on Good Friday when a silver Mitsubishi Lancer veered onto the wrong side of the road, leaving the father of two fighting for his life.
An unknown stranger called police and paramedics soon after – who rushed to Mr Ashby’s aid. The highly regarded podiatrist was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with severe leg and head injuries.
His wife, Karen, says the family has been absolutely devastated by the traumatic injuries incurred by the much loved triathlete.
“We are obviously absolutely devastated,” Mrs Ashby said.
“Christian is the most gentle, caring man I have ever met and my family agree … he would never hurt a fly.”
The father of a young girl and boy has ridden with the Ballarat Triathlon Club for the past three years. A fit and healthy rider, he loves the outdoors, but his greatest love is his family.
“He rides around the lake purely for the safety factors. He’s an extremely safe rider and not a risk taker,” Mrs Ashby said.
“His children are absolutely everything. He absolutely adores them.”
Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said police were still investigating whether the act was deliberate. The Lancer, with severe windscreen damage and a distinctive body kit, was last seen near Sutton Street at 8.45am on Friday.
“We think there is a possibility that two people were in the car at that time,” Detective Sergeant Amos said.
“The car hasn’t been found. Our belief is that it is probably stored somewhere.
“We should be getting a call from someone in the community (about the location).
“Quite frankly, what’s occurred is not acceptable in anyway whatsoever.”
Detective Sergeant Amos said police were investigating if there were two people, possibly a man and a woman, in the vehicle at the time.
Mr Ashby’s father-in-law Fred Reus said Mr Ashby had suffered significant internal injuries and had broken a number of bones.
He is expected to be in hospital for a long period.
“He’s the nicest bloke I’ve ever met, we’re devastated and heartbroken.”
Mrs Ashby has appealed for the people responsible for injuring “the person (she) loves most in the world” to come forward.
“Our children are right here beside me, and they absolutely love their dad,” Mrs Ashby said.
“If anyone has any information that could lead to the people who did this … to the most special human being in the world... being held responsible (come forward).”
The incident occurred on Wendouree Parade, east of Morrison Street.
The driver of the vehicle did not stop.
Police released CCTV footage of the vehicle travelling two hours later down Greenhalghs Road.
Mrs Ashby thanked the passerby for calling police and paramedics.
She said their swift actions saved Mr Ashby’s life. If you have information call CrimeStoppers 1800 333 000.
