IT was a twirling, swirling step back in time at the Ballarat Mechanics’ Institute yesterday.
The historic Minerva Room was a sea of colourful dresses and elegant suits as about 150 people took to the floor for an afternoon of ballroom dancing.
It was all part of the 2012 Ballarat Seniors Festival, which this year is all being held on one site at the Sturt Street institute.
City of Ballarat positive ageing development officer Jannie Alday said the four-day festival would continue today and tomorrow.
“It’s the first time we’ve ever had it all in one venue,” Ms Alday said. “Our overall intention is to break down barriers about ageing.
“We’re trying to make it a bit more community spirited.”
Today’s festival events include a tour of Kirks Reservoir and a singing workshop and concert in the Humffray Room from 7pm to 9pm.
Antique Roadshow will also be on site in the Minerva Room to assess antiques and collectibles.
Host Lester Devere will present an interactive and educational seminar, do appraisals and give advice on collecting, buying and selling.

Tomorrow the festival continues with walks, music, yoga sessions and tai chi classes.
There will also be wine tasting, wine information sessions and a chance to meet winemakers in the Humffray Room from 1pm to 4pm.
Visitors can also enjoy the “standard drink challenge” and try their hand at pouring exactly 100 millilitres of wine into various shaped glasses.
