A three-point shot on the buzzer, which would have sent the clash with Bendigo Lady Braves into overtime, rimmed out to leave the visitors with the honours 90-87.
Rush slipped as far behind as eight points in the last quarter before clawing its way back in a courageous effort under new head coach David Flint.
In the end though it was an outstanding shooting display by recruit Keely Frolling and a cameo by youngster Jessica Rennis off the bench which saw Bendigo across the line.
Frolling was almost unstoppable in the first three quarters as she set up a game-high 34 points, while Rennie hurt Rush by sinking four three-pointers in just 15 minutes on court.
Point guard Abby Wehrung continually sparked Ballarat, but there were still too many flat spots by Rush when the Lady Braves were able to take charge and ultimately break the shackles.
