THE Anti Poverty Chef Competition aims to encourage awareness of poverty around the world and in our region.
Anglicare hopes to increase the understanding of the challenge involved in creating a low-cost main meal.
Your task? To design the best meal for $5 or under, for one person.
Three winners will be invited to attend a cook-off by local "celebrity" chefs in Ballarat on Wednesday, October 17.
Judging criteria:
Taste - 20%
Colour/eye appeal - 20%
Nutritional value (high protein, cereal grain, fruit and vegetables) - 40%
Quantity/meal satisfaction/appetite appeal - 20%
Cost clearly demonstrated to be within $5 - compulsory
Categories:
Primary students
Secondary students
Open
Conditions:
Each competitior must demonstrate clearly the meal ingredients could be bought for under $5. Seasoning, such as salt and pepper, are excluded from the cost.
The cost of energy, crockery, cutlery, tables, chairs and waiting staff are not included in the $5 cost.
Portions of food can be used as long as it can be measured how much the portion would be worth; for example, half a packet of spaghetti, with the whole packet costing $3, therefore the spaghetti used is $1.50.
Food must be easily available to be purchased - no home grown food.
A winner for each category will be advised on Monday, October 15.
