The Rebels gave up a half-time lead to lose to Murray Bushrangers by 13 points at Carlton's IKON Park on Sunday.
In contrast the Bushrangers are unbeaten on top of the ladder.
Each team was plagued by inaccurate kicking for goal - 7.17 (59) to 5.16 (46).
Back in the line-up after AFL Academy duties, Hugh McCluggage was again prominent for the Rebels as Izaac Johnson was their primary avenue to goal with two majors in a low-scoring match.
Willem Drew, Charlie Lee and James Gow were others prominent as North Ballarat worked tirelessly to stay in contention.
Meanwhile, the Rebels’ under-16 development squad earlier had success against Murray Bushrangers in a close battle at the same venue. This gave North Ballarat two wins in its three Vic Country under-16 championship games.
Finals scores: Rebels 9.11 (65) to Murray 8.12 (59)
