It's time again for people-owned banks

With the latest round of silence from the banks on interest rate cuts perhaps it's time for governments to reopen government-owned (people-owned) banks like we used to have with the old Commonwealth and various state banks.

Doing so would give mortgagees an option that would allow them to pay the rate set by the reserve bank instead of the current monopoly.
