The former East Ballarat batsman, who now plays with Melbourne in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition, was announced as one of six rookies in the squad.
Thomson had been earmarked as a good chance to gain a rookie contract after being invited to the Cricket Australia PRO Camp, where he was one of 19 youngsters from around the country to be tested under the eye of state and national talent managers.
The 18-year-old was announced in the Bushrangers squad of 31 players – the largest compiled in Victorian contracting history – on Tuesday.
Thomson is joined on the list by fellow Ballarat export Matt Short, who is one of four rookies elevated to a full contract.
The 20-year-old Short first joined the Bushrangers in 2013.
Both Thomson and Short are former St Patrick’s College students and grew up playing with the Hawks in the Ballarat Cricket Association.
