Miss Tozer, who is a spritely 90 years of age, recalls clearly her time teaching the ‘Pointies’, whose school was closed in 1993. She taught there from 1949 to 1955.
“My dad was in charge of the Ballarat Fire Brigade down in Ballarat East. My first permanent appointment was at Sebas, for two terms in 1949; in the third term I came to Golden Point and I was there for six and a bit years.
Miss Tozer said the expectations of children in her time teaching was that they should behave.
“We were allowed to punish them if it was necessary. My worst punishment was to put the kids behind the piano.
Seeing her former students reminds Ruth Tozer of them as children.
“Seeing their surnames, I remember where some of them lived. It was a very close-knit community then.”
