BLOC Music Theatre will launch its season of Mary Poppins from this Thursday at Her Majesty’s Theatre, and to celebrate has run a kite-designing competition, giving free tickets away for prizes.
Carly McDonald from the BLOC committee of management said organisers received more than 230 entries.
“We sent the competition to all the schools in town to get them talking about it. Because Mary Poppins is all about imagination, we were trying to tap into that,” he said.
She said the designs were varied, using elements of the story and Mary herself as well as London landmarks.
Ms McDonald said the kite-flying scene in Mary Poppins was happy, but had a sombre undertone.
“Bert takes Michael out flying a kite, (then) Mr Banks realises he needs to spend more time with his family, which is pretty poignant to today’s society to get out with your family and do something,” she said.
