The Cr Tatchell said addition of secondary stations at Ballan and Bacchus Marsh were much needed for areas that are in the midst of a population boom.
As part of the $518 million commitment, additional platforms will be built at Ballan and Bacchus Marsh stations to improve safety for those boarding and departing, with the Bacchus Marsh station also set to receive a desperately needed additional car park to cope with heavy commuter demand.
New passing loops will also be built at Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and near Bungaree to reduce delays.
“It’s good news, the infrastructure is badly needed,” Cr Tatchell said.
“The Ballan and Bacchus Marsh stations were never designed for the foot traffic they experience.
“Ultimately, the government has realised that investment into rail infrastructure is by far and away is the best for the people.
“Bacchus Marsh is probably the fastest growing town in regional Victoria.”
While overwhelmingly happy with the commitment to the rail line, Cr Tatchell said there needs to be more investment in the local jobs sector.
“We would rather see some more investment in terms of jobs,” he said.
“And the time frame they have given themselves for this work (on the Ballarat line) is a fair pat on the back. They have to start somewhere and it’s probably 20 years behind now.”
Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said has set a lofty goal of a 2019 completion date for works, but said the main focus remains on delivering more carriages to V/Line services that are continually overcrowded.
Fourty eight carriages have been committed to for V/Line services across regional Victoria, however, production on a prior commitment of 21 carriages won’t start until 2017, meaning it could be four years until all are in use.
