Up to 75 firefighters attended the fire, after being called to the Somerville stadium - known as the Steelerdome - about 7.30am. They were unable to save the building, which collapsed.

Detective Sergeant John Coburn, of Somerville CIU, said the teenage girl, from Somerville, was charged yesterday. She will face the Frankston Children's Court at a later date.

A pair of 14-year-olds were questioned on Sunday over the fire, but have not been charged.

Detective Sergeant Coburn said police would allege that a group of up to five young people had camped overnight underneath the stadium, and had lit a fire to keep warm.

"There were some genuine attempts to put the fire out, certainly by the young people with her," he said. "Fortunately they didn't get caught underneath."

On Sunday, James Langford, president of the Western Port Basketball Association, told Fairfax that the stadium would have to be demolished and said it was "devastating" for the club.

Mr Langford said he was grateful that other clubs had offered court space to help out Western Port's junior and domestic players.
