A water main burst in North Melbourne in the early hours of Wednesday, temporarily flooding a busy intersection.

The water pressure forced open a three-metre-wide section of road at the intersection of Arden and Abbotsford Streets about 4am.
The surge has since abated, leaving a large pothole in the centre of the intersection.
Part of Arden Street from Dryburgh Street to Abbotsford Street has been closed to traffic, causing delays heavy delays for motorists.
A VicRoads spokeswoman said repair crews were on the scene, but the road would not reopen until about 5pm on Wednesday.

Motorists are being urged to travel via nearby Queensbury Street instead.
City West Water spokeswoman Claire Abbott said the burst main was not affecting the water supply to any nearby businesses or residents.

Route 57 trams were briefly affected, but are running again.
It is not yet known what caused the water main to burst.
