NEAR the jack is the name of the game; building a head to win each end is the final result.
Easy to do? Not always, but perserverence, consistency and teamwork gets the results.
It requires three teams of four players – 12 bowlers – to bring your division home, not just one or two, in the Ballarat District Bowls Division midweek pennant competition.
There have been changes to the midweek pennant score sheet, which has proved confusing for some team managers.
The new score sheet is a large, clearer sheet but asks for a few more details.
Scoring for midweek has changed, as detailed in the BDBD handbook, pages 33.11.2 (1.1 to 1.4).
Under BDBD rules all scores, even for a walkover or forfeit, must be put in when faxed to the recorder.
Teams can field a team with three players instead of four.
Under those circumstances, the lead and middle bowlers have three bowls.
The skip still has two bowls and, at the end of game, a 25 per cent deduction is taken off the total score.
That is a better outcome, though, than withdrawing the team from playing and giving a walkover or forfeit, as no bowler then gets a game at all.
Ahead of week three in midweek pennant, division one is very keenly contested, with Avenue top of the ladder, closely followed by Central Wendouree A and Daylesford.
For Avenue, Marie Russell and Kevin Kneebone are among the names to watch, while for Central Wendouree A Sue Peters and Jill Kenyon are in form.
Predictions:
In division one Victoria should win at home against Mt Xavier.
In division two I favour the away team Creswick against Learmonth.
I favour Linton on its new synthetic rink to defeat Ballan in division three, while the division four game between Daylesford and City Oval is hard to pick but I’ll choose City Oval.
