Presented by Houses magazine, the awards an annual program celebrating Australia’s best residential projects. There are nine categories in the awards, with Moloney’s being nominated in the House Alteration & Addition over 200m2 category.

Mick Moloney says the brief from his client for the project was to maintain the heritage integrity of the original building while opening new living and dining spaces in the rear.

“Buildings of this age have their own integrity,” says Mr Moloney. “We like to make a clear articulation between the old and the new, and not make a kind of faux heritage extension. We use a change of materials to mark the difference: black steel, glass, or using a shadowline.”

Mr Moloney says some of the rectification works in the extension were done using recycled bricks from a Ballarat icon, the Plaster Fun House, destroyed by fire in 2014.
