- CHFL coach Clive Raak
CHFL coach Clive Raak said O’Keefe will be monitored over the coming days after struggling through Sunday’s blockbuster against Springbank.
“We’ll assess him up until Wednesday and then make a decision Wednesday morning,” Raak said.
The veteran onballer looks unlikely to take his place on the field, according to Demons coach Heath Pyke.
Pyke said his charge strained a hamstring in the third quarter and tried to play through in the final term, but struggled to do so.
“I’d say that he’s very unlikely to play,” Pyke told The Courier.
Pyke said O’Keefe had a past history with hamstring issues and that factor would likely come into consideration when weighing up his ability to play.
O’Keefe starred with a best-on-ground performance for the Highlanders in the big win over Loddon Valley in 2014, but didn’t play in last year’s thrashing of Horsham District.
He has been named as the team’s forward coach and will carry out these duties on Saturday whether or not he takes to the ground.
Meanwhile, O’Keefe’s Bungaree teammate Shaun Finlayson is also under a fitness cloud.
Finlayson rolled his ankle in the clash with the Tigers and will also be monitored before selection on Wednesday.
The versatile tall has been a pillar in the Central Highlands interleague squad since the competition returned to senior representative football in 2012. He has played in all four victories and proved a dominant force last year, kicking six goals in a quality display in attack.
The Courier understands there is a number of other players within the squad with injury concerns, leaving coaching staff with a few headaches in naming the final team for Saturday’s clash.
Training will be held on Tuesday and Thursday night before the weekend’s bout.
Under-18 football and senior and 17/under netball matches are also part of Saturday’s fixture at Bungaree.
