If you’re intrigued by the supernatural or fancy your fair share of gore, you won’t need to travel far next weekend to experience it, with a Cursed Zombie Outbreak event at Kryal Castle.
In the words of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, the horror will look you right between the eyes.
The performance incorporates the audience as part of the show and helps find clues to break the “zombie curse”.
Kryal Castle manager Sarah Kelly said the venue was looking to make the zombie outbreak an annual event, inviting guests along for a night of mystery, adventure, and hideous rotting creatures.
She said the event took place in the middle ages in an undetermined era or “no man’s land”.
“The costumes for the survivors are a little bit Steampunk so it’s got that end-of-the-world feel about it,” she said.
“The undead are roaming the castle. The survivors are guides.”
Actor Paul Quartermain will play one of the guides, a survivor whose father has recently been killed by zombies.
He said there was something irresistible about the fantasy surrounding zombies and the supernatural.
“It’s the thrill, it’s the opportunity to be part of something like the Walking Dead,” he said.
“It’s that adrenaline pump you get when you get scared and you forget you’re not in a fake world – its’ completely immersive.”
Mr Quartermain said “the fear of the unknown” was a driving factor behind the event.
“I think it’s that fear of the supernatural, the break from the everyday,” he said.
“Quite often we finish the show and you spend an hour just talking about the experience and you talking about them as if they’re real. You form a bond with the survivors in your group and you spend an hour discussing the whole experience afterwards.”
