Exciting times
How exciting for all of the folk who live in Soldiers Hill that their house prices are skyrocketing. According to the article in today's (12th of May) Courier, the Real Estate Institute of Victoria advises that they have risen by a whopping 17.5% just in the past year, compared with an overall 4.5% increase across regional Victoria. The article also states that proximity to the Ballarat Train Station makes Soldiers Hill highly sought after, and I am advised the reclamation and development of 40 acres of derelict land and buildings adjacent to Soldiers Hill and right in the middle of Ballarat's Central Business District will be also having a big impact on these price rises. The Soldiers Hill property owners must be delighted with the proposed redevelopment of the Ballarat train station precinct.

learning starts with behaviour
Had an interesting conversation with someone today about how his wife had volunteered to help students in one of our secondary schools with their reading skills. First question comes to mind is how did they get to secondary school without reading skills? The lady lasted less than a month, leaving because of utter frustration at the attitude and behaviour of the group. General carry on, bad and disrespectful behaviour, total lack of attention, unwillingness to settle down to the tasks and to top it all, constant use of their mobile phones while in attendance. Now I ask both sides of politics, money does not solve all of the problems society is facing today. Only some radical changes in attitudes and behaviour can save us from a doomed system.

A kinder world is just around the corner
Empathy appears to be biased towards those who look like us and share the same beliefs. We may be more alarmed to hear of a single elderly person who dies alone, than we are when we hear of the distress of thousands who are forced from their homes in a foreign disaster. The groundswell of change now taking place in response to the challenge of climate change is certainly slower than some of us may hope, but the faster we recognise the common humanity of everyone on the planet, the sooner we will usher in a much kinder world.

Supercalifragilistic…...
Congratulations again to BLOC for its current production of Mary Poppins. I was so thrilled, delighted and somewhat nostalgic to see a capacity audience filled with families - yes young children, teenagers, young adults and oldies! Set design is incredible, choreographer brilliant and cast all so professional. Such colourful, fun and toe-tapping performances and poignant message we can all be reminded of. Well done all involved. Dare I say ... supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

In Australia, Mothers are able to be given the special attention and respect that they rightly deserve and this is celebrated on occasions such as the recent recognition of Mothers Day.
When a baby is born in Australia the obstetrician or midwife announces to the parents whether the new baby is a boy or a girl, and that is recorded on the birth certificate, along with the mother's name and the father's name. When the baby grows up, he or she can then call themselves whatever sex they choose, but it should never be allowed to alter whatever is on their birth certificate.
The gay lobby in Australia is better educated and wealthier than almost any other group in our society, and with an election coming on, they will be attempting to convince our two major parties to introduce their gay marriage legislation.
