We asked John to give us some of the 'golden rules' he uses to ensure he and his followers continue to hit profit, year after year.
“I suppose everyone has different ideas on how to attack a race but our mentality is simple” McLeod said.
1) Don’t let go at a horse that doesn’t hit the line! Meaning that you really want your horse attacking the finishing line.
2) Bias is all powerful over everything that you do, so don’t corner yourself on backing horses that are coming off BEST PART OF THE TRACK runs.
3) Look at the speed of the race; we find it’s always good to be working against the market opinion of this – same with wide barrier draws where the inside draws are often over bet.
4) The obvious one – “overs” – you always need value!! Value comes in a lot of forms. Some punters think value is in the roughies but you can get value out of the shorties as well, just as long as you are confident with your own prices.
Example: Market Price $2.5 Your Price $2 = +10% To get 10% out of a horse you have priced $9 you need to get $100 --- A lot tougher!!
Basically, there is more ‘value’ generally available at the top end of the market in the favoured runners than the bottom end with the ‘roughies’
5) If you can secure the race up by backing one, two or three runners and still have what you perceive as value then BET UP! You’re leaving the Bookies with the ones you don’t like.
