Police investigating the crash were told a blue station wagon was travelling south on High St in Epping when it began to turn right, across north-bound traffic.

The station wagon collided head-on with a yellow Holden sedan travelling north, about 6.20pm.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the male driver of the station wagon suffered head injuries and was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

The 53-year-old from Mernda, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died in hospital on Saturday morning.

Two men and a woman from the Holden sedan were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The man's death brings the state's road toll to 116, 14 more than for this time last year.
