The contactless credit-card payment option, which has become hugely popular with Australian shoppers, is set to cut down glacial top-up speeds at stations and stops around the state.

The vending machines will also get a spruce-up in the form of a new user interface and accessibility improvements, with glare-proof screens on selected machines and updated Braille.

Some stations already have the technology as the upgrades are made progressively throughout 2016, with PTV claiming there will be minimal impact on machine availability for passengers.

"Contactless payment for myki vending machines will make topping up quicker and more convenient for passengers," a PTV spokesperson said.

"This is the latest in a series of passenger improvements to the myki system, including faster next-generation gates and readers at some of the busiest stations and stops across the network."

Public Transport Victoria is also trialling faster myki readers on an E-class tram and bus route 684.

Public Transport Users Association spokesman Tony Morton said it was "another small step" for myki that improved the ticketing system for commuters.

"It can be a problem when you have a lot of people trying to top up at these machines, especially when you're doing it with eftpos," he told radio station 3AW.

"It can take a while to go through the transaction."

Myki could be set for a further shake-up later this year, when the state government awards a new tender for the $1.6 billion ticketing system.

The Age reported earlier this month that current operator NTT Data is in the box seat to be awarded another six-year contract.
