Experience is what we lack and she's got plenty of it.
- Laura Brady - Strikers coach
Former Melbourne University striker Keryn Walters will make her debut for the Strikers senior side this weekend against the Preston Lions after officially signing on with the club a fortnight ago.
The 30-year-old will add some much needed experience to the young Strikers outfit, which consists largely of players under the age of 20.
Strikers coach Laura Brady has had a long relationship with Walters, dating back to her playing days at Melbourne University.
Brady said the addition of the experienced head would provide the club with great on and off-field leadership as well as another avenue to goals.
“For me I’ve been able to debrief training sessions with Keryn and she gives a different perspective, and that’s been very helpful for me as a coach,” Brady said.
"Experience is what we lack and she's got plenty of it."
One of the most prominent goal scorers in the competition, Walters has won the golden boot award for most goals scored in a season on three separate occasions.
Walters added more silverware to the trophy cabinet in 2014 when she gained the league’s best and fairest award.
Walters made her first appearance in Strikers colours against the Eltham Redbacks when she took to the pitch in the reserves two weeks ago in what was her first match of the season.
Having an instant impact, Walters managed to record a hattrick in the side’s 4-2 triumph.
Brady said she would play Walters off the bench this weekend in order to allow her to regain fitness.
“She will start on the bench and we will play her as an impact player, coming on and off pretty regularly.”
The signing comes at a crucial time for the Strikers, who currently sit in the middle of the state league one table with three wins and three losses after the first six rounds of the season.
After some disappointing losses earlier in the year the Strikers have managed to regain their touch in the last two weeks, winning their two most recent fixtures in emphatic fashion.
