The cold snap rolling into Victoria is bringing the frostiest temperatures of the year, and the first major snowfalls of the season.
Wednesday's low in Melbourne was 7.6 degrees at 4.05am – the coldest temperature recorded since October 8 last year.
Meanwhile, snow is predicted to arrive in Mount Hotham as early as Wednesday evening and to continue through the weekend.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Beren Bradshaw said snow was expected down to 1300 metres from late on Wednesday, with lower falls down to 1200 metres on Saturday.
"We have a cold front approaching the state and that's what's bringing in a lot of the cooler air and the rainfall," Ms Bradshaw said.
"After Saturday the rainfall decreases so there won't be much snow falling over the alpine areas early next week."
All of Victoria's major ski resorts are expecting snow, including Mount Hotham, Mount Buller, Mount Baw Baw and Falls Creek.
On Wednesday night, Falls Creek tweeted this photo. While it may have looked suspiciously like falling rain, it declared the snow had arrived.

A low of minus 2 degrees is forecast for the ski village on Thursday, along with up to 15 millimetres of snow.
The official start to the ski season - June 11 - is less than three weeks away.
