The Score! website is an interactive directory of sport and recreation, accessible venues and events for people with disabilities with a user feedback and review system much like travel platform Trip Advisor.
Only in its early days, the website is already proving a hit in Ballarat, with nearly 70 people with physical and intellectual disabilities turning up to an inaugural free bowls day at Sebastopol Bowling Club.
The Score! directory has been launched by Melbourne-based charity, Disability Sport & Recreation.
DSR CEO Richard Amon said the website was a huge win, helping empower people with disabilities.
“There’s been research that shows that one of the key barriers to participation is simply being unaware of what’s available,” he said.
““No matter who you are, or where you live, every Victorian has the right to good health. The tool is that first stage of finding out about what’s available in the local area.”
Mr Amon said it was called Score! because users could rate events and sports providers – much like travel websites.
He said Ballarat people with disabilities had given DSR great feedback.
“They love the fact they can search and find out about things they might not have normally known about.
“The sports industries are liking it because they’re able to get their sports promoted. It allows information to be distributed more efficiently.”
Sebastopol Bowling Club president Bill Moore said the rating system helped give users confidence that the activities on offer were right for them.
“Our club is already running a few programs for people with disability,” he said.
“With a positive rating or review in Score!, a parent or carer will be able to see immediately that if their child comes to our club, they will be welcomed, included and given the chance to learn and play bowls in a safe environment.”
