As many pulled up the covers and stayed in bed, others had to rug up and head outside in freezing 5 degree weather.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said Thursday was Melbourne's coldest day of the year, at 12.5 degrees, and Saturday the coldest morning.
"Conditions have been cooling off this week, daytime temperatures were in the 20s last weekend," Mr Carlyon said.
"This morning [Saturday] it was 5.7 degrees at 5.12am.
"The temperatures are not moving much this week, with three 15 degree days and four 16 degree days, whereas most days were in the low 20s for the first half of the month."
By 9am, Melbourne had reached about 9 degrees.
There were a few showers early Saturday morning, Mr Carlyon said Melbourne only received about 0.6mm of rainfall.
"We'll see a few more in the afternoon, with fine breaks between the showers," he said.
