May has been the wettest month in Melbourne since the middle of last winter, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The city has recorded 57 millimetres of rain throughout May, with just one day to go until winter officially arrives.

The Bureau said it had been the city's wettest month since last July.

Forecaster Rod Dickson said with the rain and an abrupt end to warmer weather "it feels like winter's come all at once".

"It was a long, hot summer but now that's broken and we're seeing some decent rainfall," he said. "We had a few significant rain events that really contributed to that too."

But Melbourne looks set for a reprieve from the wet this week, with mostly sunny weather predicted for Monday and Tuesday before light cloud cover sets in for the rest of the week.

The forecast doesn't predict rain until next Saturday, when there will be a slight chance of showers.

Mr Dickson said Melbourne's winter prospects for more rain and typically chilly conditions were "better than average".

The city could be facing its coldest morning yet on Tuesday with early temperatures forecast at around 5 degrees. Our frostiest morning in May so far was last Saturday's recording of 5.7.

During May, the majority of rain has fallen in the central and western parts of the state, with the far eastern side of Victoria recording less than average rainfall over the month.

However during the last week, everywhere received at least a few drops with most of the state recording between 25 and 50 millimetres of rain.
