In a final farewell to autumn (and anything warm), Ballarat shivered through it’s coldest night of the year so far.
The coldest point was at 2am when the mercury fell to minus 1.2 degrees, however it was Weatherzone’s “feels like” reading that arguably gave the greatest insight.
At that time, it felt like a bitter -5.5 degrees, making for a freezing cold night and resulting in a heavy frost this morning.
The “feels like” temperature is measured by taking into account the expected air temperature, relative humidity and the strength of the wind at around five feet (the typical height of an human face).
Even if you’re still in bed reading this now, it might be a good idea to stay where you are.
At 7.30am, the temperature was still just 0.7 degrees.
However, it is soon expected to warm up, with a sunny top of 12 degrees forecast.
*The coldest May night in Ballarat’s history came in 1990, when the temperature fell to minus 4.5 degrees.
