Ballarat Olympian to walk Melbourne Marathon

TO RAISE awareness of healthy lifestyles, Ballarat Olympian Jared Tallent will walk the Melbourne Marathon tomorrow.

It will not be the first time Tallent has walked the Melbourne Marathon.

“I did the Melbourne Marathon in 2007 and 2009. In the 2009 event I walked it in three hours and eight minutes,” he said.

Although Tallent is participating in the event for fun, he will still finish with a competitive time.

“My normal race is 50 kilometres, so the distance won’t be as challenging as it might be for the runners, as this is their big event,” he said.

“We (walkers) still move quite quickly, I should finish around the three-hour mark.”

The marathon will be Tallent’s return to long-distance walking after the Olympics.

“I’ve been having a break and a bit of a rest since the Olympics,” he said.

“I’ve still been doing a little bit of training, just not the 200 kilometres a week, but maybe an hour a day.”

Tallent is now preparing for the 50-kilometre national titles in Melbourne in December and the 20-kilometre race in Hobart in February, before moving into the international circuit leading up to the world championships in Russia in August.

His wife Claire will be participating in the 20-kilometre event.
