On Friday more than 100 grade three and four pupils took part in a community planting tree scheme.
The 'One Tree per Child' is a world-wide tree planting incentive the Ballarat City Council has fully supported and highlighted to schools.
School sustainability teacher Jayne Campbell said the program reinforced sustainability ideas pupils had been taught in the classroom, and showed them they could have a positive impact on the wider environment.
“It important to our local environment to plant trees and for many students this is their first experience of volunteering,” Ms Campbell said.
“Tree planting gives children ‘a sense of belonging’. When they’re planting a tree or a shrub, the child is literally putting down roots in their community.”
Eight-year-old Lara Pierce said pupils were helping the environment by planting trees.
“We have learnt that trees give us oxygen,” she said.
