This year marks a decade since local justices of the peace began signing documents at the Ballarat Police Station, with a special barbecue held to recognise their sometimes forgotten contribution. Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices Ballarat Branch chairman Bryan Nicholls said the 30 local volunteer justices have been a significant service to the Ballarat community.
“In any shift they can sign up to 100 documents, but more importantly it takes away the paper work from police officers, allowing them to get back on the streets,” he said. “Sometimes the queue for the JPs is longer than those needing police.” JPs also support children during police interviews.
