The Bulls have signed off on a scholarship program with the Birmingham and District Premier Cricket League, with the deal set to see one of that competition’s best under-23 players spend a season in Australia.
Brown Hill coach Dan Davies – who played in the BDPCL during the 2000s – is the man behind the idea.
Davies told The Courier the Bulls would be able to draw on a big number of clubs from the league, which has thrown its support behind the concept.
“The applicants apply through the league directly. Then we will sit down at the end of July and look through the applications and make a decision,” Davies said.
“We’ll make a call on what we need, but if somebody is a real standout you would probably go with them anyway.”
Davies estimated the cost for the club would be about $6000 per season, with a contribution towards the player’s airfare, full accommodation and Brown Hill membership all part of the scholarship.
The BDPCL, which Davies regards as the second best premier league in England, is now calling for applicants.
“The key is making sure they’re a quality player, someone that can really contribute towards hopefully wining a flag, not just anybody from overseas,” he said.
Davies said the Bulls would have a player in time for the 2016-17 campaign.
“At this stage, (it will) probably be a batsman, but we will see,” he said.
Davies has also confirmed EJ Cleary Medal winner Matt McMahon is planning a return to the field after sitting out all of last season.
His comeback, along with the overseas recruit, will see the Bulls at the forefront of premiership calculations.
