Creswick's Brackenbury Festival on this weekend

BILLED as the ultimate old-versus-new show- down, penny farthings will be pitted against mountain bikes in Creswick this weekend.

The battle, in the form of a handicapped duathlon, is part of the township’s eclectic Brackenbury festival.

Events include a half-marathon, 10km and 5km fun runs, Catch a Carp family fishing competition, ultimate frisbee and a photographic competition (fittingly, judging action photos from the weekend’s action).

Penny farthings will take centre stage in the Great Southern Penny Farthing Tournament, based on its sister event, the national championships, in Evandale, Tasmania.

The Brackenbury originated in 1988 as a running meet to raise funds for restoring the Creswick Town Hall.

Events have been added to build interest and family participation, highlighting parts of the Creswick community.

This year’s festival will feature a Brackenbury dinner with five-time Olympian Shane Kelly as guest speaker.
